AmesWalker Compression Products Review

When you travel, whether by car or by plane, you tend to have to sit for long periods of time.  Because of this blood pools to the lower part of your legs and causes them to swell, you may also get cramps in your legs due to this.  Of even more concern is that those pains in your legs could potentially be a fatal blood clot that has formed , also known as DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis), which can cause pulmonary embolism (PE) and may even lead to death.

One thing that can help this is graduated compression products.  These types of products aid blow flow to the legs.  Applying graduated compression speeds up the rate at which blood flows through the deep veins and places the most compression at the ankles (where it is needed most), thus improving circulation.  This is of great concern to me as we travel quite a bit, often on long flights or car rides, where getting up to walk around and stretching your legs is usually limited to bathroom breaks.

AmesWalker is the leading online provider of compression hosiery.  They offer dress, casual and graduated compression athletic socks as well as sheer , opaque and maternity compression hosiery.

I was recently able to try a pair of their Microfiber Firm Support Travel Socks.  These socks are $16.95 and come in six different colors.

Since I have never had a pair of compression socks before, I didn't know what to expect.  One of the things that made me feel comfortable about donning them was that they are a medically correct graduated compression.  These particular socks have a 15-20mmHg graduated compression.  The compression is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Graduated compression stockings are made for specific reason.  So I know these socks are specifically designed with the clot risks in mind that can occur with traveling.

If you've never worn compression products before, when you first put them on they will take a while to get used to.  If you've worn support hose before, that is mild type compression, the graduated compression will especially be most noticeable around the ankle.  After having worn them, I can say you get used to it.  I was aware of it off and on the first day I wore them, and then after that it was only on occasion when I actually stopped to think about it.

Compression socks do cost more than regular socks, but since they have a purpose to reduce the chance of a very serious disease; I'd say it's worth the cost, especially if you have to sit for long periods of time either traveling or at your work place.  You might also want to check with your doctor and/or your insurance company, there may provisions in your plan to have part or all of the cost covered as well.

You don't have to worry about looking like Great Aunt Sally when you wear these either.  The pair I received were lightweight, and made of Microfiber Nylon/Lycra.  No one would even know by looking that they are compression socks.

In all I'm thrilled with my new AmesWalker Travel Socks, I feel I will be better able to enjoy my vacation and my long flights and car rides because my legs feel so much better wearing them, and I know I'm decreasing my risk of DVT.

I wore compression hosiery when I practiced nursing. My husbands wears compression socks now since he has varicosities in his lower legs. I would love to try these for myself.
