Elevate: Lightweight Luggage by High Sierra

A lot of you know our family is getting ready to take a transatlantic cruise this spring.  The trip takes us from our home in South Dakota, to Minneapolis to catch a flight to Orlando.  Then we board the ship in Port Canaveral have 14 days on the ship ending our journey in Barcelona with a flight back home.

The luggage we currently have just won’t cut it on a trip like that.  It wasn’t the best quality to begin with, the zippers are starting to tear at the seams, and now there are all those new baggage requirements too.

I was recently able to review a great bag from High Sierra.  The 22'” Carry-on Wheeled Upright in their Elevate line.

If you are looking for luggage, I'll tell you why you should consider not just this particular bag, but the Elevate line in general.

To start with, three people going away for two weeks = a ton of stuff.  You would think large suitcases would be the way to go, but that means extra fees in checked luggage, and also if you’ve ever been on a cruise you know the rooms aren’t spacious and there isn’t a lot of room to store things.

The maneuverability of this suitcase is smooth and stable.  The inline wheels are recessed sufficiently so they shouldn’t be easily damaged in overhead compartments or if you check it.  When you’re running to a gate at the other end of the terminal, you want to make sure that your bag isn’t wobbling behind you.  When we ran around our place with it, it seemed to keep up quite well.

The construction of the case makes it only 6.8 pounds.  Special built-in, high-density foam structure helps maintain the bag’s shape while minimizing weight. This is significant for two reasons.  The first is that it’s just that much easier for you to manage.  The second is because of all the new baggage fees that airlines are imposing.  When you need to pack, you don’t want your available weight limit on your clothing to be diminished because your suitcase weighs 15 pounds, this is the type of luggage you’re looking for.

Don’t let the fact that it’s lightweight fool you, this is a quality piece.

The custom-molded corner guards on the top corners and the kick plate between the wheel housings are yet another way High Sierra has your baggage protected as you travel.

The telescoping handle is made of lightweight aluminum.  It is easy to get in and out.  High Sierra has thought of so many ways to protect your baggage investment and the handle is yet another one.  When not in use it can be zipped up so that it’s not damaged.

You can see here some packed clothing.  The 22” Wheeled Upright has a 3050 cubic inch capacity.  What you’re seeing is 11 tops, 4 dresses, 5 pairs of pants, a sweater, a skirt, bathing suit and a pair of shorts.  There is still room for the necessities like undergarments and socks too.  Should I think that I need to pack more (lol!), there is a zipper that can be unzipped to expand the main compartment another 2”.

A couple of other neat features that this bag has that are especially useful for carry-on luggage are the two pockets on the front of the bag.

The top pocket is just the right size and depth for you to store your travel documents.  Boarding passes, id, etc..  The things you need quickly to produce, but don’t want to be carrying in your hand.  The lower pocket is ideal for magazines, books, video game players and things like that.

One other perk I find to High Sierra’s Elevate line is the colors it comes in.  The color shown in the pictures is Amazon/Dark Tungsten.  It also comes in Lava/Dark Tungsten (an orange/red shade).  If you’re checking your luggage it’s really nice to have a different color than everyone else so it’s easier to find your bags on the carousel.

The Elevate 22” Carry-on Wheeled Upright is functional as both a carry-on piece, as well as a checked bag.  It’s not surprising that High Sierra Sport is the official supplier for the US Snowboarding and US Ski Team.

I’m really excited to take this on our frequent travels, especially our upcoming cruise.  I’ll make sure to let you know how it stands up to our transatlantic voyage when we return from it.

Unbelievably there are more features to the 22" Carry-on Wheeled Upright, so make sure to check it out on High Sierra's site.  To see more items in the Elevate product line click here.  Visit High Sierra Sport to see their entire range of bags and luggage.  You can find retailers that sell High Sierra Sport luggage here.
