Do You Know a Huggable Hero?

Did you know more than 55% of American teens have volunteered for public service projects? (information from Corporation for National & Community Service)  That is more than double the rate of adults.

The Huggable Heroes® program is Build-A-Bear Workshop®'s way of recognizing the efforts of the young people who help others in need.  Build-A-Bear Workshop recognizes, honors and 'cele-bear-ates' these heroes who provide extraordinary service in their communities and across the globe.

This will be the 7th year of Huggable Heroes and they are looking for 8-18 year olds, who are active in helping in public service projects.  Anyone over 8 years of age can nominate a candidate (even themselves!) by visiting buildabear.com/huggableheroes or by picking up an entry form at participating Build-A-Bear Workshop locations in the United States and Canada.  Nominations will be accepted through February 26, 2010.

This year, Build-A-Bear Workshop will recognize 10 Huggable Heroes.  Each will receive a prize worth $10,000 ($7,500 in the form of an educational scholarship and $2,500 from the Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation to be donated to the 501(c)(3) charity of each Huggable Hero's choice).  They will also win a trip for themselves and a parent to St. Louis, the home of Build-A-Bear Workshop World Bearquarters.  While they are honored for their work, they will meet the other winners, and participate in a photo shoot for the 2011 Huggable Heroes Calendar.

What a great idea! In an age where the media only focuses on the flaws of young people (i.e. texting or sexting, being sexually active, failing academically) it's nice to see a positive program.

The money is a great incentive. Times are tough for everyone, so winning a scholarship may relieve a bit of stress, and convince the winner to attend school even more so.

Great post. Thanks for the information.
