A Measure of Mercy by Lauraine Snelling (Giveaway)
The year is 1903 and Astrid Bjorklund is training under her sister-in-law to be a doctor. But when a patient dies on her after surgery, she begins to feel woefully inadequate in what she thought was her calling. Of course no good historical fiction book can be without some budding romance, and indeed thoughts of Joshua Landsverk fill her head as well as her heart.
God throws a wrench into her well laid plans though by sending an African missionary into her life, just as she leaves for further medical training in Chicago.
While this is the first book in the Home To Blessing series, the beloved characters in the book have already been penned in other novels by Lauraine Snelling.
I felt drawn into the Norwegian immigrant town of Blessing, ND, maybe because I could picture the land and the people, having grown up just north of that border in the Red River Valley. Maybe it's because I now live south of it in a community also deeply traditional with the same type of culture.
Either way, spending time with the Bjorklunds and Knutsons is like spending time with neighbors albeit a hundred years earlier lol!
If you haven't read the previous accounts of those residing in Blessing, you might be a bit confused with all the coming and goings of family members and who they belong to, but that is just a minor distraction to the ongoing plot lines running through the story.
The advances in living by homesteaders and medicine are quite interesting to read, I mean really I can't remember the last time I was excited about indoor plumbing!
Of course Snelling leaves you with Astrid going off to Georgia to receive missionary training and Joshua returning to Iowa on a mission of forgiveness to his family. Neither of them know about the other's tasks and so we wait to see what book 2 holds!
I am giving away my copy of the book that I received for the purpose of this review at no cost to myself from Bethany Publishers.
