It is August 1944 and the Gestapo is mercilessly rounding up suspectedenemies of the Third Reich. When Joseph Engel, a German physicistworking on the atomic bomb, finds that he is actually a Jew, adopted byChristian parents, he must flee for his life to neutral Switzerland.Gabi Mueller is a young Swiss-American woman working for the newlyformed American Office of Strategic Services (the forerunner to theCIA) close to Nazi Germany. When she is asked to risk her life tosafely "courier" Engel out of Germany, the fate of the world rests inher hands. If she can lead him to safety, she can keep the Germans fromdeveloping nuclear capabilities. But in a time of traitors anduncertainty, whom can she trust along the way? This fast-paced,suspenseful novel takes readers along treacherous twists and turnsduring a fascinating--and deadly--time in history.
I have always been fascinated by books that take place within the era of World War II. Partially because I am a first generation North American. Both my parents were living in Germany during that time, so many first hand stories have been told to me about the events of those days. The Swiss Courier intrigued me even more as the main character shares my maiden name (Mueller), that really isn't a wonder as Mueller is about as common a German last name as Jones is here, but nonetheless it compelled me to want to read the book.
Despite the fact that many of the "surprises" of the book I had figured out long before the "twist" was revealed, I did enjoy the story line, and there were a couple incidents that really did catch me unawares with their outcome. If you are a fan of historical fiction, you will likely enjoy this book. The historical and cultural facts are seemingly accurate and are woven throughout the book well.
