Entries in Family Vacation Activities (15)
Since moving to the DFW area last July we've been slowly working our way through all the sites and attractions in the area. I've written about quite a few of them on the blog so far, and one of the things we really wanted to do in downtown Dallas was visit the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. We had a chance to do that last week when they had a Family Media Day, we took advantage of the complimentary entrance fee and I'm so glad we did! I have A LOT of pictures so you can see the reason why you need to visit if you're ever in Dallas.
Our daughter only asked for one thing to celebrate her High School Graduation and that was to go to Medieval Times, because there's nothing like celebrating a coming of age milestone with a meal you get to eat with your fingers and a bit of jousting for entertainment .
We had a chance to go to the Scarborough Renaissance Festival this past weekend. What made it even more exciting was bringing my parents along with us. My dad and mom are Faire newbies and it was fun to introduce them to this cultural event.
In a couple of weeks we are looking forward to doing so many things! Our daughter turned 18 at the end of April and is graduating from high school on the 17th. My parents and my best friend and Amber's best friend are all coming to celebrate those two occasions.
When Amber was five we went to Orlando for a vacation and we visited Medieval Times. It was such a fun evening, and she even got the chance to be crowned the Queen of Love & Beauty by our section's knight who 'won' the jousting event.
If you're looking for an indoor activity to do with the kids in the DFW area of Texas, then SEA LIFE Aquarium at Grapevine Mills Mall is a place to check out. It's a venue that everyone in the family will enjoy and it's educational too! With more than 5,000 sea creatures to view it's an underwater adventure...where you don't have to get wet!
Here's a ⟹ COUPON ⟸ to SEA LIFE Grapevine Aquarium Admissions Center to receive one free child ticket with the purchase of a full-price standard admission ticket. This coupon is not valid with pre-purchased online tickets nor can it be combined with any other offer or discount. Valid up to (4) free child tickets per coupon with the purchase of (4) adult tickets. Child ticket only valid on the day of purchase.
Yippee...summer is here! The kids are out of school and looking for adventure. When the family is out and about, think about taking along some healthy snacks so you don't load up on empty calories. Tetra Pak, known for its shelf safe, lightweight packaging has compiled some ideas for family road trips, picnics, healthy snacks and family friendly games. It's all part of the Milk Unleashed educational campaign to let people know that shelf safe milk is a great solution when you're on the go.
Compared to most families I admit that we do stay indoors a lot. We're very fair and burn easily and we don't like the cold much at all (good thing we're moving to Texas right?!). But despite that we probably spend more time outdoors than I actually let on. Especially when we go on vacation. Funny how that is.
I have so many great memories of the active things we've done when we've traveled. It's been such a pleasure to take in the sights, sounds and wonder of our daughter over the years getting to do and see things a lot of people only get to dream of.
The best family-friendly vacation spots are not confined to those destinations spelled with a
capital ‘Disney’. In fact, there are plenty of places in the USA and Canada with a great reputation for accommodating families and for providing fun activities for children, including toddlers.

If someone would have asked me what my ultimate family vacation would be last year, I would have replied a Mediterranean Cruise. A great site for moms looking for fun activities at a fraction of the price (up to 70 percent off in some instances,) zozi.com is a group discount website where a certain number of people must sign up for a deal in order for the discount to be released. Activities on the site range from
Here is another installment of a collection of blog posts from TwitterMoms. This time around they want bloggers to share five fun family vacation activities that our kids love. You can see more activities from bloggers where they are posting their links on this TwitterMoms discussion page.
1. Amber's very favorite activities revolve around that Mouse that hangs out in Florida (sometimes California too I've heard!) He also commandeers a couple of ships that we find ourselves on every year. Cruise ships are her favorite place to vacation. Not only do the ships have an amazing amount of activities for the kids, but getting to visit and experience the sights, smells and sounds of the different ports you get to visit is fun and educational!
Statecation (definition): A period of time in which an individual or family stays within the borders of their state, and relaxes at a lodging and visits area attractions.
Are you needing to get away, but are wondering whether you can afford it? Consider a Statecation, because even though it costs more to fill up your vehicle than it did a few years ago, it's still cheaper than plane tickets! (Well at least in our neck of the woods it is.)
For busy moms staying in a hotel is usually a treat. No beds to make, no nagging the kids to pick up the towels from the floor, if the mirrors get squirted with toothpaste (by accident of course!) no stress. Grab a pop, and a book and head to the pool while the kids get their energy out. Or maybe you prefer the hot tub like me...
Driving a few hours, or the better part of the day, while staying in your state offers you different opportunities, without necessarily breaking your budget. Take in some parks, or museums, maybe there is a specific event held that you want to be a part of.
When you take your Statecation consider lodging at a Holiday Inn, there is almost sure to be one near your destination since they boast to having more than 2500 locations in the U.S. (to prove my point, South Dakota ranks 46th in population (2008) out of the 50 states and we have more than a dozen locations here.)
Add to that their signature bedding which includes both soft and firm pillows, along with the power showers in the bathroom, and you might not want to return home.
Holiday Inn also has a Lowest Internet Rate Guarantee. Every hotel reservation booked through their website is guaranteed to have the lowest rate publicly available on the internet. And the ones that I looked at in our state on a travel review site, all received a "Good Buy" approval.
We have booked a room at the Holiday Inn when we have traveled to Florida, and had a pleasant stay, but perhaps before we head there again, we'll take a Statecation.
We may just drive a bit outside the city and stay at the newer Holiday Inn Express, and enjoy a night or two enjoying the mini waterpark there. Or perhaps we'll take the better part of a week to drive out west and view the fabulous art and legacy of Mount Rushmore and the history of Deadwood. But wherever we decide to go on our Statecation I know that we'll be able to find a Holiday Inn to lay our heads.
